Germany's New Cabinet
Germany's new executive government consists of 15 ministers plus Chancellor Angela Merkel. The new cabinet is scheduled to hold its first meeting this evening. Angela Merkel (CDU) is the new Chancellor.
Franz Müntefering (SPD) is Vice Chancellor as well as Minister of Labor and Social Affairs.
The new Head of the Federal Chancellery will be Thomas de Maizière (CDU).
The Foreign Ministry will be headed by Frank-Walter Steinmeier (SPD). Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU) will be responsible for the Ministry of the Interior.
Three ministers from the previous cabinet have retained their posts: Justice Minister Brigitte Zypries (SPD), Health Minister Ulla Schmidt (SPD), as well as Economic Cooperation and Development Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul (SPD).
Peer Steinbrück (SPD) is taking over as head of the Finance Ministry.
Michael Glos (CSU) has been placed in charge of the newly created Ministry of Economics and Technology.
Horst Seehofer (CSU) is now Minister of Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture.
Franz Josef Jung (CDU) is the new Minister of Defense.
Ursula von der Leyen (CDU) will head the Ministry for Family Affairs.
Annette Schavan (CDU) will take over the Ministry of Education.
Also in the cabinet for the SPD are Wolfgang Tiefensee, Minister of Transport, Building and Urban Development, as well as Sigmar Gabriel, Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.
