Condolences and Offers of Assistance After Earthquake in China Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke with Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao on Monday to express her sympathy in light of the high number of fatalities after the earthquake in southwest China. She also affirmed Germany’s offer to provide assistance quickly. Also on Monday, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier spoke with his Chinese counterpart, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, and expressed his condolences. He voiced his shock at the high death toll claimed by the earthquake in Sichuan province and also offered Yang the assistance and support of the German Government. The Federal Foreign Office, the German Embassy in Peking and the Consulate-General in Chengdu, the provincial capital, are in touch with Chinese authorities. May 13, 2008
