The Military History Research Institute |
Very often the German Embassy receives inquiries concerning German military
history. Some are from individuals or relatives wishing to obtain addresses
of former German soldiers whom they once met or would like to see again.
Others are requests for more detailed information about a former soldier
or others who served in the German military during World War II. Unfortunately,
it is beyond the scope of the German Embassy to answer these questions.
However, the German institutions listed below might be able to assist
with such inquiries:
- The Military History Research Institute [Militärgeschichtliches
Forschungsamt]
Zeppelinstr 127 1 28, 14471 Potsdam/ Germany; Fax: +49 331-9714-507
www.mgfa.de
- The German Office for the Notification of Next of Kin of Fallen Members
of the former Wehrmacht [Deutsche Dienststelle für die Benachrichtigung
der nächsten Angehörigen von Gefallenen der ehemaligen Wehrmacht],
Eichborndamm 179, 13403 Berlin
Germany Fax 49 030 41904-100 http://www.dd-wast.de/]

The
Military History Research Institute is a unique institution of the German
Armed Forces. Today, modern military history is dedicated to the investigation
of military power as well as of the constant interaction between army,
state and society. One section of the Military History Research Institute
provides expertise to scholars seeking assistance in their research of
German and international military history. To the extent possible, the
institute also replies to requests from private persons and the media.
The institute receives more than 2,500 questions each year. So to expedite
your request, please provide the following information about the person
you are searching for: last name, first name, date and place of birth,
last military rank and unit, and last known place of contact. Please be
aware that the Military History Research Institute only replies to requests
in written form (fax or letter), e.g. e-mail requests cannot be accommodated.
The German office for the Notification of Next of Kin of Fallen Members
of the former Wehrmacht, which is responsible for notifying next
of kin of members of the former German Wehrmacht who were killed in action,
maintains an alphabetical central registry with over 18,000,000 records
of persons who served in World War II. Tracing requests may be made by
mail only and can take up to six months to process.
For information concerning submarines, please contact the Submarine Archives
[U-Boot Archiv, Altenbrucher Bahnhofstrasse 57, 27478 Cuxhaven,
Germany; www.uboat net]
or the Foundation for the Submarine Tradition Archives [Stiftung Traditionsarchiv
Unterseeboote Ernst Gock Weg ll. 27476 Cuxhaven, Germany], which
is able to answer inquiries concerning WWII submarines services. In addition,
further information about members of the German Armed Forces is available
at www.reservisten.de.
The German Federal Archives (at www
bundesarchiv.de) may also be helpful, as it maintains a variety of
official documents dating back to 1815.
