Augsburg: Angelic City
The location of the Christmas market in the Bavarian city Augsburg mirrored the wanderings of local tradesman throughout the town and its suburbs but for several decades, it has made its home on the marketplace in front of the city hall.
In Augsburg, playing one of the city’s angels has become something of a beauty pageant. Young women wanting to play the angel must be graceful, have musicality, and—naturally—be able to avoid dizziness at great heights. Once a week during advent, they are lowered from the top of the city hall. All 24 angels appear illuminated in front of the hall, becoming a huge Advents calendar symbolizing the days left until Christmas. Augsburg also boasts its own Christmas pyramid, which although not the largest at around 25 feet, is the only one to feature a barrel for pouring Glühwein, the mulled hot spice wine that is a staple at Christmas markets throughout Germany.
