This startling production of Bernd Alois Zimmermann's iconic opera Die Soldaten achieves the immersive, total theater experience the German composer took decisive steps to realize. These performances, staged at the Park Avenue Armory, allow the audience to literally travel on a moveable seating unit to encounter extremes of intimacy and overwhelming, all-enveloping sound. The 110-piece Bochumer Symphoniker shares a multimedia palette complete with an electronic soundscape to produce a maelstrom of wrenching emotion, and as the composer so boldly envisioned, one of the most important operatic works of the second half of the 20th century.
