For the first time in the more than 50-year history of the German Armed Forces, soldiers publicly took their solemn pledge in front of the Reichstag. The event marked the 64th anniversary of the failed assassination attempt on Hitler’s life on July 20th, 1944.

At their meeting in Berlin, Merkel and Ban Ki-moon discussed UN peacekeeping missions, situations in Darfur, Myanmar and Afghanistan, the Millennium Development Goals, and climate change mitigation. With stops in Berlin and Bonn, it was the Secretary-General's first official visit to Germany.

The EU member states thus want to step up cooperation efforts in the region and enter into what Merkel called "a partnership of equals." The new Mediterranean Union rests on its members' hopes for peace and stability in the Middle East.

Chancellor Merkel and former US President Bush were the guests of honor at the ceremonial opening of the new US Embassy in Berlin next to the Brandenburg Gate. "You have always believed in the power of freedom," Merkel said in thanking America for its commitment.

The major industrial nations meeting in Japan have endorsed the goal of halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The G-8 wants to take this joint position into negotiations on a follow-on agreement to the Kyoto Protocol. Merkel described the move as clear progress in protecting the climate.

A standing-room-only crowd gathered at the National Air and Space Museum to hear three astronauts—Hans Schlegel of Germany, Léopold Eyharts of France, and Carl Walz of the United States—recount their experiences aboard the International Space Station and the space shuttle.

The German government is putting its faith in intelligent energy regulation and incentives to save energy, adopting a second package of measures as part of the Integrated Energy and Climate Program. For example, "intelligent meters" will help consumers choose energy efficiency and savings.

The German astronaut spoke with Germany.info about his experience helping to deliver and install the European Columbus laboratory to the International Space Station in February. From space, “you don’t see any borders; you don’t see any religions, races,” Schlegel said.

UNESCO has added a group of six Berlin housing developments, all built from 1913 to 1934, to its World Heritage list, signaling a trend toward cultural recognition of modern landmarks. The structures include designs by architects Bruno Taut, Hans Scharoun and Walter Gropius.
