Meeting in Stralsund is Highlight of This Year's Transatlantic Outreach Program (TOP)

Stralsund

Each year since 2002, U.S. social studies teachers have been invited to take part in information and conversation seminars in Germany as part of the Transatlantic Outreach Program (TOP), a public-private partnership initiative involving the Federal Foreign Office, Deutsche Bank, the Robert Bosch Foundation and the Goethe-Institut. The aim of TOP is to give U.S. social studies educators an up-to-date and varied view of Germany. German Ambassador Dr. Klaus Scharioth is chairman of the TOP board of directors.

This year four groups of teachers, with a total of 80 participants from all over the U.S., are visiting Germany for two weeks. The stops include Berlin, Bonn, Nuremberg, Hamburg, Dresden and Stralsund, where the highlight of this year's program was an official photocall with Chancellor Angela Merkel and President George W. Bush on July 13.

Alongside these visits to Germany, TOP also supports social studies in the U.S. with a wide range of topical information on Germany, for example Internet-based instructional kits and practice-oriented teacher training.
