Hermann Hesse is one of the most widely read and best-selling German-language authors. In 1946, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature for his works, which include novels, stories, reflections, poems, and critical essays on politics, literature, and culture.

A book and antique dealer by training, Hesse was born the son of a missionary in Calw in the (then) state of Württemberg on July 2, 1877. He had a difficult childhood and youth, marked by rebellion against his conservative family upbringing. Hesse was married three times and divorced twice.

His works depict the duality of human nature, which is pulled in various directions and must try to reconcile its inner spirit with the external material world. Hesse distinguished himself through his open and critical spirit and his existential search for the meaning of life.

“Anyone who does not fit into the world is close to finding himself.” This quote captures Hesse’s attitude towards life, which time and again sent him on distant travels in search of himself, among other places, to India. His works document his inner transformations. Hesse succeeded in conveying universal, timeless themes and prompted his readers to turn to eastern philosophy as a means to solve life's crises.

His acclaimed novels Siddharta, Narziss and Goldmund, Steppenwolf, and The Glass Bead Game emerged in Switzerland, where he had long been living when the National Socialists rose to power in Germany. Hesse was an adamant opponent of Nazism and published articles critical of the regime, which resulted in his works being banned in Germany.

After the war, in 1946, Hesse's works were again published in Germany. His poetry collections were often illustrated with his watercolorings. Hesse began and ended his career as a poet, with a collection of poems being his last publication before his death in the summer of 1962.
