Director Fatih Akin Sweeps German Film Awards
German-Turkish director Fatih Akin can simply not stop winning awards. A winner at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival last year, his movie "The Edge of Heaven" (Auf der Anderen Seite) picked up four awards at the German Film Academy's ceremony in Berlin Friday, April 25. Akin’s film won the top prize for best film, best director, best script and best editing. The favorite for the prize, Doris Dörrie's "Hanami – Kirschblüten" took second place in the running for best film, whilst Dennis Gansel's "Die Welle" was awarded the bronze Lola for third spot. Whilst Dörrie had to be content with the Silver Lola, the protagonist in her film, Elmar Wepper, was awarded the top acting prize for his performance. It was the 63-year-old’s first major role in a cinema film. In the Best Actress category, Nina Hoss was awarded the prize for her role in “Yella”. The German Film Prize, which was awarded in 15 categories in total this year, is the highest endowed film prize in Germany with 3 million euros in prize money up for grabs. More than 1,000 industry professionals — members of the German Film Academy — cast ballots to determine who wins the prizes. The government underwrites the prizes to be used by the nominated films, as a kind of subsidy for future projects. April 28, 2008 Source: www.young-germany.de
