EU Film Showcase Celebrates 20th Anniversary; Features US Premieres and Award-winning Films
The 20th European Union Film Showcase aims to meet even higher expectations this year with a program of more than 30 films from 25 EU member states, including US premieres, festival award-winners and future contenders for the foreign-language Oscar. In addition, Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira will be honored with the AFI Silver Legacy Award for his distinguished career and film artistry before the screening of his film “Christopher Columbus, the Enigma” on opening night. The festival, which runs from November 1-20, is presented by the American Film Institute in collaboration with the Cultural Counselors of the European Union Member States’ Embassies and the Delegation of the European Commission in Washington, DC.
German Films Audiences will have the chance to view two highly acclaimed German films: “Yella” by director Christian Petzold and “Summer '04” (Sommer '04) by director Stefan Krohmer. “Yella” Nina Hoss won the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 2007 Berlin Film Festival for her riveting portrayal of Yella Fichte, a young woman who leaves behind her failed marriage and broken dreams in a small East German town in pursuit of a better job and a new life in Hanover. After a tumultuous farewell with her violent ex-husband Ben (Hinnerk Schönemann), Yella meets Philipp (Devid Striesow), a mysterious venture capitalist with whom she later becomes romantically involved, and learns she has a knack for dealing with ruthless businessmen. Strange things start happening, however, as Yella’s past comes back to haunt her, and this metaphysical thriller becomes increasingly surreal and disorienting. “Summer ‘04” (Sommer ’04 an der Schlei) Martina Gedeck of “The Lives of Others” and “Mostly Martha” fame stars in this powerful drama set in the beautiful scenery around the Schlei, an inlet of the Baltic Sea, where a liberal, open-minded couple, Miriam (Gedeck) and Andre (Peter Davor), are spending their vacation with their teenage son. When their son’s visiting girlfriend starts spending time alone with an older man, Miriam is concerned. She soon finds herself, however, entangled in a highly provocative love triangle that has tragic consequences. Full of uncertainty and tension, this romantic thriller raises questions about moral conceptions and explores the delicate balance of emotions and power in personal relationships.
