Tracing Ancestors

The German Embassy and the German Consulates General cannot, unfortunately, assist individuals in tracing their ancestors in Germany. However, the following general information might be helpful:

Local Genealogical Societies and Libraries

Before you start to correspond with genealogical societies and offices abroad, you should first check with the nearest local genealogical society and library. Many libraries maintain good genealogical archives and records. The Max Kade Institute for German-American Studies has a library on the history and cultural contributions of German-speaking immigrants in the United States. The library includes books, manuscripts, newspapers, journals and documents.

Records from Germany, Genealogical Societies, German Genealogical Magazines, Internet Resources, Publications, Overseas Mailing Tips Birth, Marriage and Death Records from Germany (after 1871) These records may be obtained from the registrar's office in Germany, where the birth, marriage or death was reported. Full and correct name(s) and date(s) must be indicated.

Your inquiry should be addressed as follows to:
Standesamt
_________________________ _________________________
(Fill in Zip Code) (Fill in City)
Federal Republic of Germany

Helpful Suggestion

To ensure that the response to your letters will be sent via Air Mail, it is suggested that you enclose at least two international reply coupons, which can be purchased at any US Post Office. Please always write clearly (print or use a typewriter) and give all information and data available.

Genealogical Societies

The central office of the Association of German Genealogical Societies (DAGV) in Brühl offers research assistance and gives information on how to trace your ancestors in Germany. DAGV has an excellent web site with information from how to get started to listings of genealogical societies and clubs, to databases and much more.
